Cleaning Your Gutters Is Like Brushing Your Teeth
11/2/2022 (Permalink)
Clogged gutters cannot not serve their purpose when they look like this.
As your local SERVPRO of Clayton County franchise, our professionals are ready and available 24/7/365 to assist you when you need us most, as it relates to water damages to your home or place of business. While it is extremely important to our organization to be that helping hand to you, it is just as important that we play a part in helping you prepare for the unknown. Unfortunately, no one knows when disaster will strike, but there are some things you can do each year to be prepared, especially as storm season comes and goes.
In our business, we have seen far too many valuables become ruined because they were not properly stored in your home. Google offers great options for storage containers and taking a few minutes to online-purchase several of these is well-worth your time. Once you receive your containers, we recommend going through your home and placing photo albums, books, family heirlooms, and other precious valuables in the containers-- dry, of course.
Even though this may seem obvious, schedule an semi-recurring calendar reminder on your phone to remind yourself when it's time to clean. More often than not, those seasonal, decorative items that get tucked in that unseen corner of that room on the other end of the house. In the event of a water damage, you will likely not have time to clear these areas that collect items throughout the year.
And your gutters! While it comes at the expense of a couple hundred dollars typically, having your gutters periodically cleaned out each year is essential to protecting your home from heavy rains. If your gutters are clogged, they cannot serve their purpose in funneling water away from the foundation of your home. Take the time to schedule a professional to come out and clean your gutters for you. Cleaning your property's gutters is like brushing your teeth! Think about it!

What are the different categories of water damage?
5/19/2022 (Permalink)
Did you know there are different categories of water and different ways of handling water damage depending on the type? Water damage is more common than people realize. Approximately 14,000 water damage emergencies happen every day, both commercial and residential.
As stated by the IICRC (Institute of Inspection Cleaning and Restoration Certification), which certifies and sets the standards for the cleaning and restoration industries such as SERVPRO, there are three categories of water that you need to be on the lookout for.
- Category 1 Water: This form of water comes from a clean and sanitary source (faucets, drinking fountains, showers, etc.) and does not pose a hazard if consumed by humans.
- Category 2 Water: This category of liquid is also referred to as “grey water” and contains a significant degree of chemical, biological or physical contaminants. If ingested by humans, this type of water can cause illness. Common examples of category 2 water include losses from toilet bowls, water discharge from dishwashers or washing machines, and sump pump failures.
- Category 3 Water: Refers to the worst classification of water and is known to be grossly unsanitary. It is also called “black water,” and it could cause severe illness or even death if ingested. Sources of this type of water include sewer backup, flooding from rivers or streams, and ground surface water or standing water.
If you ever run into a situation where you are dealing with any of these categories of water, give SERVPRO of Henry, Spalding, Butts Counties and SERVPRO of Clayton County at 678-432-3003 and let us handle this disaster for you!
Water Damage in Basements
2/1/2022 (Permalink)
Water Damage in basements is a common occurrence in Georgia. Issues with the draining system, foundation cracks, and heavy rains are some of the most common reasons this area of the house is prone to flooding.
If you see damp areas in your basement, try to determine the source. Make sure the drain is not clogged. Seal any cracks you see on the walls and floors with a water sealant found in all hardware stores. Try to ventilate the area by opening windows and doors and turning fans on to speed up the drying process.
If it is safe to do so, go outside and inspect the area around the basement to make sure that water is flowing away from the structure and not into the basement. A new draining system or sump pump may have to be installed. Another important step is to make sure the gutters are clean, and they should be pointing away from the foundation of the home.
If the water damage in the basement is extensive, call a professional company to help with the water remediation process. This should be done quickly in order to prevent mold from forming.
SERVPRO of Henry and Spalding Counties and SERVPRO of Clayton County has more than 20 years in the restoration business to help you quickly deal with your basement cleanup. We are available 24/7, just call 678-432-3003.

Your Property in Clayton County and Water Damage
11/1/2021 (Permalink)
We have experienced a high number of calls due to the heavy rains in the area. Although some water messes are completely unavoidable, there are some things that homeowners can do in order to avoid extensive water damage in their Clayton County homes that can reduce the final repairs bill.
Three things homeowners should do to prevent water damage
- Store Valuables
We all know that some storm damage and leaks cannot be predicted, but the best way to prevent water from destroying your effects is with proper storage. We suggest going through your home and storing your most valuable possessions, such as photo albums, books, or family heirlooms, in plastic storage bins. Make sure that everything stored inside the bins is completely dry.
- Periodic Cleaning
It is common for homeowners to designate a closet, or the attic, or even a basement corner for things that they will get to it when there’s free time. By the end of the year, is a pile of Easter décor, Christmas boxes, summer clothes, etc. It is the typical “out of sight, out of mind” mentality most of us are guilty of. But when a big storm event or major water damage happens in your home, you might not have time to clear these rooms out. To avoid potential water damage from ruining your items, clean before storm season approaches.
- Gutters
Having your gutters cleaned is essential during storm season because they help guide water away from the home and foundation. Clogged gutters can be extremely costly to homeowners. Without anywhere to go, the water will backflow into your home, causing significant water damage. Make it a priority to regularly clean gutters and if you can afford to do so, have them professionally maintained throughout the year.

3 Tips to Prevent Water Damage in Your Home
7/22/2021 (Permalink)
With a summer that has been full of so much rain in Henry and Clayton County, reports of water damage have been extremely high. Even though some water fiascos are completely unavoidable, there are some preventative measures you can take to help avoid water damage in your home and prevent costly repairs.
The Top 3 Ways to Prevent Water Damage
- Properly Storing Valuables
As mentioned above some storms and leaks you cannot predict, but the best way to prevent water from destroying your belongings is with proper storage. We recommend going through your home and storing your valuables such as photo albums, books, or old toys in plastic storage bins so they are safe from the water!
- Seasonal Cleaning
Throughout the year, it’s tempting to throw unused items into the basement or garage. But when a big hurricane appears, you might not have time to clear these rooms out. To avoid potential water damage from ruining your items, clean before storm season approaches.
- Gutters
Properly functioning gutters are essential during storm season because they help guide water away from the home and foundation. Clogged gutters can spell disaster. Without anywhere to go, the water will backflow into your home, potentially causing significant water damage. Make it a priority to regularly clean gutters and have them professionally maintained throughout the year.

Going on Vacation? Do these things before leaving
5/24/2021 (Permalink)
We get a lot of calls from people dealing with a major water emergency after coming back from vacation. The water could have been running for days non-stop. The longer the damage goes undetected (usually more than 72 hours), the greater the risk of major water mitigation needed in the home.
We have a few steps you can take before leaving your home to minimize the risk of damage.
- Inspect your roof for missing or lose shingles (especially if your roof is older than 5 or 10 years)
- Clean gutters and downspouts- If it is not safe for you to do so, have them professionally cleaned.
- Check that your sump pump is working like it is supposed to.
- Inspect appliances for leaks and replace old hoses.
- Install water detectors. There are many products available in stores that will connect to Wi-Fi and instantly alert you of a water leak.
- If you are going to be gone for an extended period, let a family member or neighbor know, and explain where the main water shut off is in case of an emergency.

Thermal Imaging Technology

Thermal Imaging Camera at work
When our technicians scope a job, they use state of the art technology to detect moisture found in wet materials like walls, ceilings, floors, etc. At SERVPRO of Henry and Spalding Counties, and SERVPRO of Clayton County, we use Thermal Imaging Cameras (Infrared cameras) to find hidden wet spots that would have gone undetected otherwise.
Thermal cameras detect temperature by recognizing and capturing different levels of infrared light. This light is invisible to the naked eye. All objects emit infrared radiation, and it’s one of the ways that heat is transferred. The hotter an object is, the more infrared radiation it produces. Thermal cameras can see this radiation and convert it to an image that can be seen on a screen.
With the help of the Thermal Imaging Cameras, our crews have been able to find roof leaks, leaky pipes behind walls, and condensation problems. The use of these cameras also benefits the homeowner since it minimizes unnecessary demolition of walls, floors, etc.
If you think you have water damage in your home, please call SERVPRO of Henry and Spalding Counties, and SERVPRO of Clayton County today at 678-432-3003.

What does Category 1, 2 and 3 Water mean?
7/12/2019 (Permalink)
One of the first things our water technicians learns while training is the difference between Category 1, 2 and 3 Water and how to treat each damage.
Category 1 Water just means it is clean water and it does not pose a risk if a person comes in contact with it. It could be from faucets, water fountains, the bathtub. Category 1 water can change to category 2 or 3 if it comes into contact with other sources, surfaces or materials.
Category 2 Water or “gray water” damage come from toilet bowls with urine, washing machines, dishwashers, and sump pump failures. This type of water contains a significant degree of chemical, biological or physical contaminants.
Category 3 Water or “black water” is the most dangerous type of classification. It is extremely unsanitary, since it contains pathogenic, toxigenic and many types of harmful bacteria. This type of water could cause sever illnesses or even death if ingested. Sewage backup, flooding, standing water and ground surface water are categorized as 3.
SERVPRO of Henry and Spalding Counties is available 24 hours a day and has the knowledge and experience to deal with any of these categories for water. Call us at 678-432-3003 and let us handle this disaster for you!

Dealing with broken supply lines in your home
11/13/2018 (Permalink)
If you have any questions, call us at 678-432-3003
Even though we are far from the ocean here in Henry County, that doesn’t mean we don’t deal with a fair amount of flooding in the area. Believe it or not most of the flooding calls we get come from broken supply lines in the home.
Supply lines are those thin hoses that run to the different appliances like refrigerators, dish washers, toilets, water heaters, washing machines, etc. The quality and price of these hoses vary drastically. Most people opt for the least expensive option without knowing that cheap hoses need to be checked and replaced often.
Swift bursts and slow drips can cause a considerable amount of damage which require flood mitigation and sometimes mold remediation. If you haven’t checked your supply lines in a while, now would be a good time to walk around your home and do so.
If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to give us a call today- 678-432-3003. SERVPRO of Henry & Spalding Counties provides 24 hour fire and water damage restoration services
Appliances and Water Damage
8/3/2018 (Permalink)
Call SERVPRO of Henry and Spalding Counties today at 678-432-3003
Any of your appliances connected to a water line could potentially cause water damage. One of the most frequent problems that we see is water damage from a leaky refrigerator. Unlike other types of water damage, this can happen over a long period of time without the homeowner noticing it, since the damage is hidden under and behind the fridge.
If you have the ice maker connected to the water line, make sure the line fittings are secured. Check water valves and defrost drains for leaks or cracks. If the fridge has a clogged defrost drain, the water will leak into the lower compartment of your fridge and run onto the floor. Condensation could be another reason why water is pooling around the fridge, since it can run down the walls and into the floor. The best way to avoid dealing with water damage cause by your fridge is to regularly check and maintain the appliance.

Categories of Water

Give us a call at 678-432-3003!
Water damage can happen to anyone and at any point in time. In fact, it usually happens at the least opportune times; like the saying goes, “when it rains, it pours.” With this in mind it is important to be as knowledgeable and prepared as possible to handle a water damage situation in your home or building.
If you ever run into a situation where you are dealing with any of these categories of water, give SERVPRO of Henry & Spalding Counties a call at 678-432-3003 and let us handle this disaster for you!

Broken supply lines can be a major headache
11/16/2017 (Permalink)
SERVPRO of Henry & Spalding Counties is a phone call away...678-432-3003
Most people see that SERVPRO is a flood cleanup company and think, "I don't live by an ocean or pond or river so the chance of my house flooding is next to nothing."
What most people don't know is that most flooding calls we get come from broken supply lines. Supply lines are those thin hoses that run to appliances like refrigerators, dish washers, toilets, water heaters, clothes washers, etc. The quality and price of these hoses vary drastically. Most people opt for the least expensive option without knowing that cheap hoses need to be checked and replaced often. Sudden bursts and slow drips both can cause a substantial amount of damage which require flood mitigation and sometimes mold remediation. If you haven't checked you supply lines in a while, or ever, now would be a good time to do so.
We are available to provide estimates to any supply lines that may be of concern.
Flooding In Georgia
8/10/2017 (Permalink)
According to the World Economic Forum, “in the last 20 years, flooding has been the most common natural disaster by far, accounting for 43% of all recorded events.” We can completely understand this with all of the rain and floods we have been having in Georgia this summer! You wake up on a Saturday morning ready to relax by the pool or go to the lake after a busy week at the office, only to see the dark clouds glooming over you. You see the trees shaking from the gusts of wind blowing by and you hear the thunder in the distance. You hope that the storm will “blow over” quickly, but then it begins to pour. You watch as the water accumulates across your property and then, just like that, the water is now intruding into your home. Now are you not going to be able to spend your weekend outside enjoying a dip in the pool, but your basement has become your own personal swimming ground! Take the measures to prevent additional damage to your home or office, then call SERVPRO of Henry and Spalding Counties to properly take care of the damage that has already been done.
If your home or commercial building is affected by a flood, give us a call day or night! Give us a call at 678-432-3003!
