Going on Vacation? Do these things before leaving

We get a lot of calls from people dealing with a major water emergency after coming back from vacation. The water could have been running for days non-stop. The longer the damage goes undetected (usually more than 72 hours), the greater the risk of major water mitigation needed in the home.
We have a few steps you can take before leaving your home to minimize the risk of damage.
- Inspect your roof for missing or lose shingles (especially if your roof is older than 5 or 10 years)
- Clean gutters and downspouts- If it is not safe for you to do so, have them professionally cleaned.
- Check that your sump pump is working like it is supposed to.
- Inspect appliances for leaks and replace old hoses.
- Install water detectors. There are many products available in stores that will connect to Wi-Fi and instantly alert you of a water leak.
- If you are going to be gone for an extended period, let a family member or neighbor know, and explain where the main water shut off is in case of an emergency.
